Dressage Free Riding Rules –
read carefully before riding!
The free ride sign-up sheet is
outside the "show" tackroom in the dressage barn.
1) You may only ride a horse who you
have successfully ridden in dressage class. If no
horse is available who meets this criterion,
contact Karen for an alternate horse choice.
2) You may only ride if an
instructor or staff member will be on the premises
for the duration of your ride. See shortenyourreins.com/wwu/free_ride.html
or the whiteboard outside Gayle Lampe's office for
schedules.
3) When riding in the Rowland Arena,
you may only ride if there's another human
(mounted or unmounted) in the arena with you for
the entire ride.
4) Work on only those things that
we've worked on in class.
5) Each horse may only be ridden two
of the three available free-ride days (i.e.,
Friday and Saturday, Saturday and Sunday, or
Friday and Sunday).
6) You are responsible for giving
your free-ride horse the same level of care as
your in-class horse. Groom him well before and
after your ride, clean his tack, clean and re-bed
his stall, and clean and re-fill his water
buckets.
7) In order to give as many people
as possible the chance to ride, please sign up for
a horse only if you're sure you'll be riding. If
your situation changes and you won't be able to
ride, cross your name off the list. If you don't
ride, but fail to cross your name off the list
before noon that day, you are responsible for your
horse's stall and water buckets.
8) Sign up for only one horse, and
only for one day at a time. If there are still
horses available toward the end of a day, and you
meet all the other requirements, you may ride a
second horse. If you've signed up for a horse for
one day, and no one else signs up for that horse
on any other day, you may ride him a second day.
9) When riding in the UPHA arena,
jog carts get the right-of-way. You must travel
the same direction as the jog cart. Always ride
defensively when in the UPHA arena.
10) IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT!
IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT! On the free-ride
list, check off your name after you've ridden, so
that keepers can keep track of each horse's work
schedule. IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT!
